Day 35s simple task: Day 22 of a book a month

What’s this all about simple tasks? http://wp.me/p5y43M-3z

Now that your main character is motivated to act, make sure the villain is prepared to face this force. If the villain was mad at one person before, have them upset with an entire race now. Give them a reason to hate all of humanity. What would make them hate life in it’s entirety? They should believe with every ounce of their soul that they are doing the right thing. They need to be driven to take down the greatest threat. Give the villain a position of power. Give them a bomb. Give them everything your main character wants so he may tempt them. Threaten your villain like he was the hero.

Day 34s simple task: Day 21 of a book a month

What’s this all about simple tasks? http://wp.me/p5y43M-3z

Give your little people a reason to keep going in this world. What is at stake that makes them overcome their fear? Why dose your character stand back up to face a fight they have already lost? Can you have more that they need to save? Is the universe at risk? Have you threatened the lives of all the people whom your character loves? Make sure the stakes are high enough that your character puts his own life at risk. If they aren’t ready to make the biggest sacrifice then threaten them with a larger issue. Your character is no longer trying to find their dog, they are trying to stop a mob boss from blowing up an alien civilization. Write your character being forced to be brave.

Day 33s simple task: Day 20 of a book a month

What’s this all about simple tasks? http://wp.me/p5y43M-3z

What would happen if your character gave up? What if they fail? What would mess them up so bad they would abandon their dream? Who would be the worst person your character could meet right now? What is the worst place for them to be?  If there is anything left for your characters to hold on to, get rid of it. Make sure every character is the worst off that they could be. Take the character that is afraid of heights and water, make him think his girlfriend is dead, put him on a plain to see her, crash the plain into the ocean, have them ‘rescued’ by pirates, make sure he looks like someone else so they try to kill him and then force him to save everyone on the boat. Go farther than you thought possible. Have someone run over by an ambulance. Let out the worst.

Day 32s simple task: Day 19 of a book a month

What’s this all about simple tasks? http://wp.me/p5y43M-3z

Today we make the villain a real live person. Give them flaws, give them dreams, give them fears.  Tell us what happened to the villain in his or her past to make them do this. Look at your character sheet for him and make sure all of the information is down on paper.  Take a paragraph or two to describe how the villain stands, walks, the color of their eyes, make me fear them, make them real.

Day 31s simple task: Day 18 of a book a month

Welcome to your characters tear-down day. Whatever they just accomplished should be ripped away from them.  Don’t go easy on them, you will be able to be nice to them again soon. Today, make their heart ache, break their bones and rip them to shreds. Use the characters worst fears. Raise the stakes, make them want to succeed even more. Make your character struggle, they need to try their best, and fail. Unlike you, you need to try your bests and succeed. Give all of your want to complete this book, and all of the pain of doing so, to your characters so you get your emotion out on paper.

Today we start setting up the turning point. Your character should think everything is going well at this point. Start boosting their self esteem. Have them beat a henchmen, rank number 1, do well in a specific task, this will make the turning point even better. We will be breaking our characters tomorrow so think about what you can take away from them. Let them kiss their love only to take him away tomorrow. Be happy alongside your characters today, and make the day great for them.

If you’re feeling burnt out, try messing around with a short sub plot. Try giving your characters a little internal conflict, and try to have fun. Put a mini story inside the big one. Have your characters lose something important. Give them a good scare. Put them in debt. Then pull them out of it. Doing something a little off beat might make it easier to move forward.

As your characters start rising back up from their fall, you can work on your theme. Set the tone with some interesting scenery and turn to introspection. What has your character learned? What do you want your readers to learn? Know at this point, that this draft is just for you and no one else ever has to see it. Put down your (and the characters) deepest darkest fears, their terrible back story, and then, let them rise above it. Release your dough about the story and let your casts let go of their inner demons. Now is the time for redemption, revenge and thematic presence.  Get to work.

Week 2 complete! You’re doing great at this! By now, you are probably getting tired, though. So catch up on anything you might have missed so far. Try to be at scene card five. Then when you are board of happy go lucky character, put them through the grinder. Make it so everything is not as it seems. Have the villain rise again, or let a new one take over his rain of control. Have the love interest leave for no reason. Give them all the trouble they deserve for being so hard to write. You’re half way through and it’s time for act two.

Alright, take it easy. You and your characters have been doing a lot recently. While things are calm, and your character successful, develop your sub plots. Let them drink the sweet, sweet nectar of the gods so that when they lose it, there world will go tumbling into a pit of despair. Don’t forget to still have them strive for something, though. This can be love, or just a simple subplot, as long as your cast is on the go. Don’t let these scenes take the glory away from the rest, but they can’t be boring. Take a rest, sit down and write.
